ChangeHampton.org: Keep Our Water Free of Chemicals

DYK?

Suffolk County uses more pesticides than any other county in the state—6.5 million pounds annually (according to a Department of Environmental Conservation 2021 study) including some 1700 different products. Suffolk County Water Authority only tests for some 400 of those.  We already know our drinking water is contaminated with “forever chemicals” or PFAS.  We need more research and to educate ourselves about the impact of all the chemicals we are using in our yards, agricultural fields, nurseries, wineries, golf-courses, athletic playing fields and public parks.

The water issue is intricately tied to our concerns about over-development and our practices of clearing precious native habitat to build larger houses, septics, pools, driveways at a time when our climate is changing and we receive heavier, faster rains.  If we remove or build over all of the native trees, shrubs, plants and grasses that help to clean our soil and ground water, what are we creating?
