Water Quality Report: Below NYS Standards – Poor Condition

According to a report issued last week by Dr. Christopher Gobler of Stony Brook University and the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, the coastal zones on Long Island, East Hampton included, do not meet the New York State and federal guidelines for water quality. In fact, the report indicates our waterways are at an all time “low” that violate the guidelines .

For the last few decades, Dr. Gobler has conducted weekly surveys of Long Island waters and has specifically been retained by the Trustees to sample and monitor various bodies of waters through the Town of East Hampton. Dr. Gobler’s Long Island Marine Monitoring Network which was established in 2004, reports surface water quality from more than 30 locations- from Montauk to the border of Queens.

Last week, our bays, harbors, and estuaries rated in considerably low quality as there were dead fish washed ashore, dead zones, toxic algal blooms and fecal bacteria.
