The Trustees have received reports of deceased birds around Trustee water bodies. With the increased incidence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) across the country, the NYS DEC has been monitoring the occurrence and impact of this virus within New York State. The virus quickly spreads across populations and has the ability to infect mammalian species. In light of this, the NYSDEC has launched an Avian Influenza Reporting Form where the public can report suspected avian mortalities directly to the agency (see button below for the link).
Early detection of HPAI is key to mitigating it’s spread among susceptible populations such as ducks, geese, gulls, raptors, shorebirds and other waterfowl. The NYS DEC is encouraging citizens to look out for the signs and symptoms in potentially infected animals as well as to report sightings of bird carcasses.
Symptoms of HPAI may include diarrhea, discharge from the nose, coughing and sneezing, and incoordination. However, many birds may show no symptoms before death. It is also likely there will many deceased birds in one location.
The public is advised to avoid contact with sick or dead birds and other mammals. The public should prevent contact between sick/dead wildlife and any domestic animals.
For additional information, visit the NYSDEC website.
If you observe dead birds (typically there will be multiple in one location) or witness birds in distress or disoriented, please report it to the NYS DEC Region 1 at 631-444-0310 OR use the link below to access their online reporting form:
As of March 4, 2026, the Trustees are placing the above warning signs in areas where dead birds have been observed as well as heavily trafficked areas for dog walking. Exercise caution if you see these signs or dead birds and mammals around ponds, harbors or on beaches.
You may download copies of the warning signs below.
