*Due to this week’s unsettled weather forecast, applications are starting today, July 23rd, at noon.

*The Accabonac Harbor salt marsh will be surveyed for mosquito larvae locations tomorrow, Thursday, July 24th, by Deputy Clerk Trustee John Aldred and crew. Suffolk County Department of Public Works – Division of Vector Control crews inspect marshlands that have historically produced large numbers of developing larval mosquitoes.  If Vector Control crews inspecting these sites locate mosquito larvae in sufficient numbers, aerial treatment of sites may be necessary.

Aerial application by helicopter allows us to treat large sections of marshlands with mosquito breeding while the larvae are still densely clustered in small treatable areas.  Once mosquito larvae emerge as adults, they can fly considerable distances (miles) from the marshes and impact surrounding communities.

To reduce the need for adult control over large swaths of residential neighborhoods, larval treatment is the most practical method to control these developing mosquitoes.   When the helicopter is actively treating the marsh, it flies at a very low altitude of under 50 feet and turns off the application equipment while making turns and traveling between sites.  All materials applied are registered for use by the US EPA and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and are used as directed per the product’s label and as specified under our pesticide use permits.

This spray notice will be sent to this group to keep you informed when Vector Control will be treating marshlands in your area by helicopter.

Please let us know if you would like to be removed from this list or wish to add any additional e-mail addresses to this notice.

Please see the attached list for sites scheduled for treatment this week.
