It is said that every seashell has a story. But what about those who pick up shells, who live by the sea and love the beach, who fish and clam, sail and swim, boat and bathe and so much more? What are their stories?
LTV aims to find out. On Sunday, July 21st at 7:30PM, the studio will present “Sea Stories!”
Curated by Wainscott-based writer John McCaffrey, the event will feature dramatic readings of original work by East End artists, including William Norwich, who has written and edited for The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, Town & Country, and Architectural Digest, as well as author of the novels My Mrs. Brown and Learning to Drive.
Live music will also fill the evening. David Cataletto, an educator and environmental advocate, accompanied by Nick Epstein, will combine tales of the East End’s maritime past with Sea Shanties featuring ukulele, percussion, and guitar.

John McCaffrey, a resident of Wainscott, is the published author of one novel and three short story collections. He also teaches creative writing at the Rochester Institute of Technology, pens a regular column for The Good Men Project, and is the editor for Vine Leaves Press’s 50 Give and Take. His father first introduced him to clamming and fishing and crabbing on the East End, and he’s never stopped.
Visual Art: Savio Mizzi was born and raised in Gonzo, Malta, where fishing was a communal way of life and culture. Since coming to America more than forty years ago, and settling on the East End, he has applied the wisdom gained from his youth to excel in two passions: fishing and painting. In addition to being an experienced captain and much-coveted guide for those seeking to land trophy striped bass in the waters around Montauk, he is also an esteemed fine artist, with works gracing the walls of angler lovers as well as covers of books and sporting magazines.
Music: David Cataletto grew up in East Hampton and attended the public schools here. He graduated from the University of Mass Amherst with a major in Anthropology and went on to receive a Master’s degree in teaching. David now teaches English and history at the East Hampton middle school where he runs the Surfrider Club. An East Hampton Trustee and advocate for the local environment, David often presents on the history of whaling in East Hampton, and performs, with accompaniment, sea shanty’s and sailor’s work songs from the 1850’s featuring ukele, guitar and percussion.
